Is there any progress with the new website?
panda inspirations: ziza.es/2008/05/19/8.html
I like ZeroByte’s layout…looks attractive and more unique. It looks like an upgraded version of the current layout…I’m fine with the somewhat cartoonish layout, just the current main page doesn’t seem to have enough…a little too static. To me, Clooner’s looks too similar to sites I’ve been to. I don’t have an exact site in mind…just that the type of layout looks familiar
looks like you joined panda quite recently so you propably dont know about it.but the new design already is in place for several month now
just wanted to let you know so you dont waste your time with creating new logos or something like that.
greetings,
thomas
ps: neat panda ying-yang.
Yes but don’t you worry, it was only a “10 minutes” idea
Good work!
I dont think this is a final design, this was like a step in the right direction. It would be great to get a better design still. Its not just as bad as it was before.
Guys, is there any progress on this? I’d love to replace the current layout with a new, better one.
I like clooner’s main page, but the content pages look dull. Also, it doesn’t really give away the idea of a ‘3d’ engine - no Panda with 3D glasses, no super-cool super-big screenshot at the front page, etc.
(Also, on a sidenote, do you guys like the current layout better if it is centered?)
panda3d.org/index-centered.php
I would suggest using Dot Net Nuke to make a new site as it is a very versatile and easy to use content management system
Are you kidding ?!?
THE dot net as in “.NET”??? … aside from the fact that i strongly object for several reasons, all i can ask is:“why would you want to change the entire system just to set up a new webside??? it’s just about a new design/layout”
btw… do we even need a CMS at all??
I think the website serves it’s purpose lol. I dont find anything wrong with it.
i understand the problems with writing .NET but Dot Net Nuke is very stable(used by many major corporations) and it is also very easy to extend using PHP if you know what you are doing meaning no need 2 play the .NET, it looks good and it is really fast to build sites in, it would take about 30 mins to rebuild this site with it. (that being what makes it better then joomla or drupal as either would take days) and i would appreciate it if criticisms included some reasons or questions about the system as apposed to just are you kidding? I wwill put together a demo site under a sub-domain given that as i said it would take about 30 min since all the content is already here it would really just be copy and paste
Can I get concrete specs on what we want from the redesign?
we want the new layout want to make people use panda3d more.
Man, those aren’t concrete specs, more like objectives. What specifically do we want from the new site so we can design towards that. Are we happy with all the sections? What should the front page do? What features do we want from the site?
Here are a few of my demands, not real specs or so, sorry;
- It must have the feeling of a 3D engine, either by incorporating screenshots in the layout (like we have on the front page) or by putting pandas with sunglasses on it. =)
- Not too wide. Maybe fixed-width.
- Must look professional.
- It must be easy to find stuff (the home/features/download links must be well noticable, etc.)
- Not too cartoonish.
Also, is a centered website better than the current? Try it:
panda3d.org/index-centered.php
Hi new here, wanted to say as someone who has just looked at a bunch of engines in comparison, the opening page doesn’t inspire confidence that this is a robust tool match.
Compelling things that should be big bullets right up front:
- This is a 3d GAME engine, not just a graphic engine; there goes 3/4+ of the other “engines” out there.
- The N is for networking, there goes another 3/4.
- FULL Python support, not “just” a scripting language.
- Toontown (2003), holy cow a six year old real product from this engine.
- Fully documented with over ## tutorials
- Current total number of posts in the forums (> 35,000)
For your image, one that might express the 3d tool concept well would be a mixed mode half rendered, half wire frame panda image.
If you want to illustrate a point, have the panda bouncing a ball and then show the 10-20 lines(?) of python that makes that scene happen.
The only weakness I see just getting started is a seeming lack of editors. Gave me a pause to look at NeoAxis seriously, but ultimately the documentation + python + engine maturity swayed me (and a little fondness for CMU; my Freshman year there they had changed it to Carnegie-Mellon glad it’s back to CMU.)
Figure this might be good feedback while the decision process is fresh in my mind. Likely be hearing more from me as I get more than my feet wet in Panda3d.
I’ve just centered the current layout. What do you guys think?
Quick logo I just did in 30 minutes. The goal here is for it to be clean and professional looking. In order to fit in the website it would need a new, cleaner design, of course, I’ll send you guys a layout other day if you like this logo.
Although ideally I think you should drop the “3D”. Panda carries all the presence you need so you want to get rid of it, you can make 2D games with panda anyway, right? so even from that point of view it’s accurate.
Of course, you may not want to call it panda in fear from litigation from other software makers with a product called panda, in which case you could expand it like this, just an idea.
All this is still work in progress, I just wanted to know what the panda team thinks of these. Also, it’s mono-color, so if you hate the orange it can be easily recoloured into any other color in photoshop, any color will work, really. Red, green, blue, tournasol… I recommend this orange, though.
Could be shaded too:
I would encourage you to go with a pure 2D logo, though.
