Does panda3d.org need a new layout?

New version to answer some of rsoft criticisms in irc:

The concern here is whether the panda shape is easily recognizable, we would like to know what you think. In this second version i added some more shade to address that.

Personally, I don’t like the bolder caption, btw. But maybe it’s more popular. Which one do you prefer?

Hi

It did take me few minutes to understand the logo :frowning:

In this matter, the last one is the best I think, but still not perfect yet ( why to have a squared border in one corner and not the others ?)

I don’t like the orange color , that I find not professional ( strange eh ?) I prefer the blue one.

For the title, my preference goes for the ‘game engine’ one ( I don’t like too much the 3rd dimension for the 3D )
And I like the logo next to the title

This is the final logo.

And website layout:

I really like the blue logo (the one that has neck) the yellow one i did not see panda3d in till i saw the blue one.

May I have the blue logo in simple black in white format? Use full for icons and other stuff?

I guess you mean like this.

I uploaded a vector version, anyway (SVG) with both versions of the logo (better for print, etc):

http://www.2shared.com/file/8245464/c1af4dfa/panda_kit.html

Do you guys have a separated license for content, btw? I don’t care about it but you should establish one while you are at it if you are gonna redistribute the logo in icons, or the documentation, etc. BSD doesn’t really work for content. For a BSD licensed project like this it would be normal to use CC-atribution for the content.

I am not a huge fan of the rounded gradient look that seems to be so chic these days, but I will acknowledge that many equate that sort of appearance with a professional, polished application. So be it…

Gogg, those mockups look nice. I would also be interested in having a vectorized format of that second logo.

I posted a link to the SVG in a post above. Or do you mean something else?

i love the new logo.
the new design looks very traditional and a bit cold, but professional as well.

if you need some help in making html + css out of it, just let me know.

in my opinion changing the color scheme of the website would be good, also the last logo is quite nice. i wonder if this could be scaled to a application icon? changing the colors would be nice because the current green looks “poisonous” on some screens. i also think that getting away from the clear panda image is good because panda3d is too close to wwf (wwf.org/) anyway.

ah thanks but I sent rsoft the html last night

yeah, forgot about that. i’ll do an icon pack with the panda later

ok, did the icon pack. here’s how the icon looks btw:

The pack includes.

Windows:

  • Multivolume “panda3d.ico”, 32 bits with alpha transparency. Includes 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48 and 256x256 resolutions as per MS guidelines.
    Mac OS X:
  • Multivolume “panda3d.icns”, 32 bits with alpha transparency. Includes 16x16, 32x32, 48x48 and 256x256 resolutions as per Apple guidelines.
    Other Unix window managers (kde/gnome/etc):
  • panda3d-icon.svg (vectors, preferred if supported, like gnome)
  • panda3d-icon-256.png
  • panda3d-icon-48.png
  • panda3d-icon-32.png
  • panda3d-icon-24.png
  • panda3d-icon-16.png

Download

Edit: The small resolution ones need to be reworked with a little of pixelation (any pixel artist here?) And in general i’m noticing they dont work very well with dark background so I’ll probably make another version of these soon.

That’s an improvement. It always bothered me before.

This is for rsoft, but I thought I’d share to get feedback. Disregard the incongruence and the layout imperfections, since it’s just a quick mockup to get the point across and the final may look nothing like this.

how about making it all green + white?
or maybe a 3-color scheme

the blue is cold and has not much to do with pandas, imho.

sry to swim against the tide but why waste time into aesthetics when could be spent in more important and effective things?
I feel badly the need to a better forum search engine, to speed up things when searching infos and could be good to have a well organized ‘snippet center’ where to find good working pieces of code and maybe a resource repository for free models, scenery and sounds. I guess we should focus in those kind of things in my opinion…

ok, this is the last time I ask something like this in a public forum, I’ve learned my lesson.

I’m pretty sure, you see, that rainbows have not much to do with apples.

Or that blue has not much to do with apples, either.

I’m also pretty sure that sea shells aren’t red and yellow.

I could be doing this all day, really, msnbc’s rainbow turkey, msn’s butterfly, jaguar’s theme used to be green and now it’s silver, peugeot’s lion has a blue background i think, etc.

For the sake of being constructive, what you just made is a very common mistake, it’s an intellectual, deductive association in a process that should be perceptual and deductive (design), and it’s very common, every non-creative person does it. For example, if you see a blue apple somewhere (like Apple’s 90’s logo) you don’t give it a second thought because you are in perceptual mode, but once you are forced to think about a new logo you switch to intellectual mode because you are used to constructing things that way, so your process goes like “ok, an apple, apples are green or red” And you construct from there… And this happens because most people only have to construct things intellectually through their life. Problem is, for graphic design you have to construct things perceptually so this kind of associations are not only unnecessary but discouraged (cause they tend to produce forgettable images).

Anyway I just wanted to know about the info that is now displayed on the frontpage, but nvm.

no, this will only take rsoft a day and will have a huge impact in the visibility of the project which means more contributions in the long term. Neglecting this would make absolutely no sense at all.

the forum search function works very fast and very accurately for me (hint: I have to always use the “Search for all terms” option because it’s the logical one.) It would be more useful though if the limitation of searches/minute was removed or the timeout lowered, +1 for that.

We are already focusing on that, a community wiki is some of the things we are gonna discuss. You are being overly pessimistic, imho. We just got started.

this is just your point of view Gogg, not necessarily true or make sense to all. The actual visibility of this project make me easily find it and stay stuck for about 3 years and, for what I see, it is true for new forum users on a daily basis - it is not the face that make an apple worth to eat but his taste and substance and how well it feed you. But this is just my POV of course.

I’m not talking about how fast reply the page to my inquiries but the lack of tools to find faster the information that I’m looking for, weeding between the huge amount of posts but honestly I ain’t good ideas on how to improve it, beside to have a wiki as cited in your post, so I guess that could be a partial solution on what I was complaining.
But still needs a repository of snippets and resources as I told, where one can find in a snap samples to cover all the engine features and, even better, pieces of working code, and free resources too, to help developing fast beta versions of your game using ready to go animations, models and sounds as placeholders to test your code while in early WIP stage.

No! >_<
Sorry, i should think more before writing. And yes, you’re right in all points - learned my lesson as well.

Gogg the design looks very good :exclamation:

But I personaly think the logo should be orange.
Orange and green are complementary colors which are nice to look at and then you also have a warmer feeling.
