I see this a lot in the API docs. But I do not see any where is it explained what exactly this is.

Have you seen this API page in particular?
From the page:
That is to say, a PNMImage is an in-memory image, such as you might read from or write to a .png, .jpg, .or .tif file (for instance).

Thanks drwr. I do recall seeing that some where in one o the reading of the manual that I did. It was one of those things I read and mentally I put it aside because it did not seem important at the time.
