It is primarily used for 2D game development and features many of the same tools and features as Panda3D. You may be wondering what is the big deal, after all I intentionally mislead it. Well, the issue is I’ve in fact been using this chatbot and asking it many questions about many topics, also including Unity and Panda3D, before starting this conversation. In every case, without exceptions, it provided wrong answers to questions I already knew answers to. I have encountered many other types of issues I can share if anyone actually cares, but here we are seeing one specific issue: the data it has collected has not and probably cannot be verified to be accurate because there’s just too much data. And I’m essentially seeing the result of training on all of the StackOverflow or really any answers from programmers rushing to post answers to topics they didn’t understand well at all. I’m sure anyone who’s used StackOverflow for a long enough time has encountered such people.

I could go on talking about other statements the chatbot made about Panda3D, like how it apparently has a these things called “Behaviors, which are similar in concept to Unity Components, but are typically implemented using Python scripts that are attached to Nodes.” and a lot of similar baseless statements, but that’s for another day.

I just hope people here will reconsider seriously assuming ChatGPT is a good programming tutor. Far from it. A personal tutor will at least sometimes admit they don’t have an answer to your question, while so far it seems clear to me that for Big Tech’s chatbots that’s not very marketable.

Maybe I’m some strange exception and got wrong answers about many topics constantly even though I tried to give it more and more chances to prove me wrong, or maybe all those influencers on Youtube and Big Tech folks are making all those headlines because hype sells.

While I won’t speak to the origin of ChatGPT’s inaccuracies–and while I’ll readily admit that I haven’t used it myself–what you describe lines up with what I’ve been seeing elsewhere:

That ChatGPT will happily provide answers that are very much incorrect, and do so in a manner that gives an appearance of confidence.

(And not only for Panda- or even programming- related questions, I think at least; my impression is that it behaves thus in general, and that its answers are currently not trustworthy.)

[Caveat on all that follows -
Being retired from the software community for decades my opinions on this subject may be out of date and, having never interacted with any of these AI chatbots I may be ‘speaking’ in the dark but;]

In my (very humble opinion);
There is no such thing as AI (as of this present date)
Intelligence is not having an infinite sized database to refer to when attempting to solve a problem regardless of the depth of the algorithm.*

A finite set of unambiguous instructions that, given some set of initial conditions, can be performed in a prescribed sequence to achieve a certain goal and that has a recognizable set of end conditions.

Unambiguous; most problems in the real world are initially poorly defined, it is the intellect of the problem solver that resolves the ambiguity and hence (usually) solves the problem, even if it’s through brute force and ignorance.
Intelligence is also dependent on the ability to acknowledge ‘I haven’t the bloody faintest how to sort this out’

When the quantum computer ‘evolves’ into something more than a very powerful (almost used the word clever) mathematical problem solver then perhaps something AI ish will start to shine forth. Perhaps it will require bio-computing integrated with said Q machine before Skynet is born. However, and back on the subject of now, I wonder if anyone has managed to persuade said Chatbot that 1 + 1 doesn’t equal 2, or to ask it what is the square root of -25.

ChatGPT is, at its heart, a text generator. It generates good-sounding text, without regard for correctness. It is very good at that, but don’t rely on it to produce consistent or accurate knowledge.

As a knowledge database, it is actually not very great, because it will “hallucinate” facts for anything that is not very well-trained and well-ingrained knowledge, and state them with great confidence.

Let’s not give in to their marketing. “Hallucination” is nothing more than an attempt to make this product sound more like a true AI or AGI and make it sound more human-like. The correct description should be something along the lines of “error” or “mistake”. Only conscious beings can hallucinate. Hallucination requires external stimulus and a sensory means of processing the stimulus, to then be able to experience perception without said stimulus present. That’s not at all what is happening here, which is instead just false/wrong/incorrect or missing information in the dataset.

Agreed. I asked it what DIRECT stood for in Panda3D and it made up an acronym by itself. lol
