However, this isn’t really the initial problem anymore, so I’m not sure which post to mark as the solution.

I prefer the approach that you took, myself–but that doesn’t mean that everyone will. Clearer to you or clearer to me doesn’t necessarily mean clearer to someone else.
This is arguably one reason to make separate threads for separate problems. 
(Along with the fact that it may make it easier for others with similar problems to find relevant information.)
I’d suggest marking the solution to the original problem, and leaving it at that.
