Can't start sample games on Ubuntu 10.04

I just installed the Panda3D SDK on a 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 with Python 2.6

I used the installer
panda3d1.7_1.7.2~lucid_i386.deb

When trying to test the included examples, I get these errors

import: unable to open image `direct.directbase.DirectStart': Permission denied @ blob.c/OpenBlob/2480.
from: can't read /var/mail/panda3d.core
from: can't read /var/mail/panda3d.core
from: can't read /var/mail/direct.gui.OnscreenText
from: can't read /var/mail/direct.showbase.DirectObject
from: can't read /var/mail/direct.task.Task
from: can't read /var/mail/math
from: can't read /var/mail/random
from: can't read /var/mail/direct.interval.MetaInterval
from: can't read /var/mail/direct.interval.FunctionInterval
import: unable to open image `sys': Permission denied @ blob.c/OpenBlob/2480.

When running with sudo, the permission errors disappear, but it still tries to read panda files from \var\mail, which is empty.

Welcome to the forums!

You’re trying to run the Python scripts as if they were shell scripts. Instead, run them with the Python interpreter.

Do not try to run Panda stuff as root.

Thanks

I’m not familiar with Python. I intended to use Panda with C++.

I got another error, but running the nvidia-cg-toolkit-installer fixed it. It’s working now.
